It is based on 18 years of research into street violence and contains inputs from the top survival and self defence experts of India and abroad.

Unleash your Inner Animal!

July 21, 2008

If you’ve ever been attacked you must have noticed that in spite of all your practice and technical knowledge you do not use every technique you know in a fight and you are likely to get more winded than you do in 5 mins of a real fight than 2 hours of training in class.

Another thing that happens in a fight is the narrowing of the cone of vision. you lose peripheral vision and can only see a few feet in front of you. It is then easy for people to creep up behind you and knock your head off.

All these are effects of adrenal stress or the adrenal dump

these are the ones I’ve experienced in my real life fights

1. loss of peripheral vision
2. heavy breathing
3. heart pounds harder
4. knees shiver
5. loss of fine motor skills
6. very less pain felt when attacked
7. unclear thinking or no thinking

Training with adrenal stress

I had the good fortune to be trained by watchmen and street fighters at the age of 13. The emphasis of my training by these unlettered folks was this…
1. Always bring on adrenal stress by visualization and hard anaerobic exercise.
2. It is important to master only those techniques that can work in adrenal stress (gross motor coordination)
3. Always train to use fakes in adrenal stress

They placed so much importance on it that for one year I trained to bring adrenal stress for 15 minutes everyday before practicing techniques. These guys were antisocial elements but geniuses when it came to training in violence. It was the only thing they knew.

To simulate an adrenal dump you need to do the following
1. leap out in all the 8 directions of the compass as far as you can. After each leap do one push up and leap back to your starting position.
2. jump up and squat and do one more push up

This completes one cycle

Repeat the cycle of 1. and 2. for 5 cycles

3. Now do the same thing but imagine opponents attacking you as you leap. Replace the push up with a back fall as you land after each leap. (Ju jutsu/ Judo/ Aikido back fall or stage fall)

4. Do the same but replace the back fall with a shout and a fierce attack with your hands and legs. Finish the attack by bringing your imaginary opponent to the floor and breaking his ankle

Important points to be noted

1. Keep your strikes straight line and simple to nose, eye, throat, groin, knees, shin and instep
2. ALWAYS fake. The fake is a real strike with full intention of striking but it is not the main strike. it is used to open a target for stiking.
3. Always vary between high and low targets
4. Strike with full emotional content and put all your feelings into each strike. Imagine someone you hate as your opponent
5. ALWAYS shout for each strike. It’s the only way you’re going to get really mad at your imaginary opponents. (so you might want to go to an isolated place to practice if your room isn’t soundproof!)
6. ALWAYS turn and look for your imaginary attacker’s imaginary friends. (You’ll notice the loss in peripharal vision if you practice the steps in the previous step properly)

The practice burns permanently into your neuro pathways after 40-50 days and whenever danger arises and you find yourself in an adrenal stress condition you can unleash the animal in you.

Practice with care and don’t kill anyone.

Kickboxer’s Spirit

July 20, 2008

“I have a flat foot so my feet hurt”
“I have knee pain”
“I have a sore back”
” I have wheezing”
“I have fever”
“My feet are slipping”
“I have a catch”

Oh yeah? Try telling your attacker that. In a fight survival is all that matters. And that is how we train. The only excuse to not do something is death. Challenge yourself. Metamorphose from wuss to warrior. Don’t argue for your limitations. Give yourself a free hand to…

  • be healthy
  • lose weight
  • be strong
  • be self confident

The only thing holding you back from what you want is you. In fact it’s the only thing that can.

“Martial arts begin and end with courtesy”

May 31, 2008

A line I read in Sosai Mas Oyama’s writings intrigued me. He says “Martial arts begin and end with courtesy”.

Today I came across the uncontrolled angry behaviour of an acquaintance. He was hurling abuses and raising his voice, bringing up unpleasant instances from the past and demanding that he be respected. Although the behaviour was not directed at me, my first thought was that no one deserves to be treated that way.

I began learning martial arts to protect my own dignity. I cannot accept such rowdy behaviour, neither do I behave in that way. I think I understood what Sosai was saying.

As a martial artist I expect myself to be soft spoken and well behaved. It is through courtesy and care that we become a team. It is through courtesy that worthwhile projects are planned and executed. It is through courtesy that rage is extinguished.

It is through courtesy that enemies are vanquished.

Not by hitting them. Not by insulting them. They come back frothing at the mouth if you do that.

If you consider yourself a serious martial artist then please learn the nuances of courtesy. It will save your life.

Keeping it real!

May 5, 2008

1.Be bold enough to question your teachers. Insist on sensible, demystified instruction. There is a tendency among senior teaching martial artists to convert their classes into cults where his or her word is final. Don”t let that happen to you.

2. If something you are taught does not work, try to see what you are not seeing. If you see no merit in the technique and no one can show you any, put it in a box called ‘doubtful” to be taken out later and experimented with when you are more mature but DO NOT teach it to your juniors till you are 100% sure what it is.

3.I agree with Sosai Mas Oyama when he says your journey in martial arts begins after 1000 practice sessions. At 5 sessions a week that is 4 years. And he says mastery comes with 10000 sessions. Sorry folks that”s 40 years. Unless you do 10+ sessions weekly like me. So PATIENCE must be your watchword and foremost virtue
